February 16-17, Western Canadian Championship, North Battleford, SK
The Western Canadian Championship this year was our first trip out of the province and despite challenging winter driving conditions the whole CBR gang had a blast in Saskatchewan.
It took us a little while to get ourselves familiar with the new competition venue but once the race course and the range conditions were "tested" we got right back into our usual race routine. Sprint was the scheduled race format for Saturday. Junior Girls opened a competition for CBR athletes with India and Gillian once again fighting it out for the top honors. India was once again triumphant in her performance with Gillian close behind in 2nd.
Chad Berling renewed his rivalry with Mark Singleton of Edmonton Nordic as these two raced to 2nd and 1st places respectively. Two more CBR athletes finished inside top 5 with Brett placing 4th and Gavin in 5th.
Senior Boys were so close to the podium sweep in Edmonton and accomplishing this task seemed nearly improbable in such a strong field of athletes. And yet Ben, Connor and Sergey managed to do just that and swept the podium placing 1,2 and 3 respectively. Jakob and Wesley had a strong race too as both finished in top 8. One remarkable and absolutely unexpected result for CBR athletes. Way to go boys!
Sunday's race format was Mass Start and India MacIsaac had to do battle with Junior Girls without her teammate Gillian Gowling who missed the race with the flu. That didn't seem to affect India in any way as she raced to her second Gold medal of the weekend.
Chad Berling did his best trying to chase down Mark Singleton from ENSC in Junior Boys category but couldn't keep pace with the Edmontonian speedster and finished 2nd, again. Jerome Gobeil delivered a come from behind type performance stealing away the bronze medal after his last shooting. Gavin Culver continued to impress with consistent results placing 5th and displaying a very rapid pace on skis. Brett finished in 7th place.
All 5 of our senior boys finished in top 9 with Ben capturing a Silver medal.
